A Look Back At Weddings

Here is a wonderful infographic explaining the history of weddings. Before all the technology, the video cameras, the glitz and the glamour, weddings were all about dowries and simple vow exchanges.

The graphic starts with an introduction about weddings. From gift giving to honeymooning, the contemporary wedding is steeped in tradition. But when did these traditions begin, and what do they signify? Let’s take a look at the historic development of weddings, and see some of the most lavish gifts exchanged between bride and groom.

Historians believe the first weddings occurred some 4,350 years ago. Before this, families were composed of groups of roughly 30 individuals.

Here’s a quirky fact, wedding bands started way earlier than you thought. In 2,800 BCE, Egypt, the first wedding bands were recorded.

In 860 CE, Pope Nicholas I decrees that an engagement ring was required of all who intended to marry.

In 1477 CE, Maximilian I popularized the diamond engagement ring.

In 1499 CE, Anne of Brittany wore the first white wedding gown.

In 1775 CE, Law decrees any marriage void if the bride wears makeup during the ceremony. That would basically make all weddings void now if that law were applied today.

In 1840 CE, Queen Victoria wore a white satin wedding gown, which started the tradition of wearing white wedding dresses.

In 1858 CE, Princess Victoria played Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus” during her processional.

In 1924 CE Marshall Field introduced the first bridal registry.

In 1951 CE, Las Vegas Little White Wedding Chapel opened.

In 2007 CE, TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” premiered.

Weddings have certainly come a long way!
